The Hanse Explorer is off for South Georgia. There was an unusual amount of albatross, which fits our trip because there’s a whole lot of symbolism around the albatross. They are said to be the souls of dead sailors, so killing an albatross is disastrous bad luck. Someone with a burden or obstacle is said to have ‘an albatross around their neck’, the punishment given in the poem to the mariner who killed the albatross. The head of an albatross being caught with a hook is used as the emblem of the Cape Horners, sailors who have rounded Cape Horn.
Amazingly, hourglass dolphins also joined in to welcome us on the journey.
